Any Suggestions?

Hi all!! I have a home improvement question for you today. The other night we had a big storm here, and when I got up in the morning, I found that this piece of my roof was coming off. Now, I'll tell you that this particular piece was slipping out from under the shingles a couple of months ago, and Bryan slid it back under, and we completely forgot about it. Now that we've had the storm, it has fallen completely back out. What would your suggestion be? Should we tuck it back under and staple-gun it? Tuck it back under and nail it? Pull it off? Call a roofer? What would be your suggestion?? Thanks so much for the help!! I know I can always count on you guys for some opinions... ;)

If the pictures are too hard to see, you might try clicking on them to make them bigger. Hopefully that will help!! :)

With that being said, I'll leave you with this little photo I took of Maddy yesterday (sorry she's not smiling, she was still a little under the weather). I like to call this one, "Like Father, Like Daughter". Yep... Maddy flew Elmo's plane yesterday when we went to her friend Charlie's house!! :)

Love you guys!! See you SOON!! :)

That looks like the felt paper from under the shingles. Is there still more felt under the last few rows of shingles. If there is, you can probably just cut of the part hanging down. If you decide to push it back, just drive a roofing nail through the bottom row of shingles under the tabs of the second row of shingles.
Love.

Sounds like grandpop hit the nail on the head with his advice.

Most shingles have a strip of tar along the top side so when you lay the next row on top of them they will stick to the tar when the roof gets hot. On the first row they will put a starter row underneath with the tar side at the bottem so the first row has something to stick to. It looks like that starter row is what is coming out. You may be able to push it back in and tac it or at worst you can buy 1 or 2 shingles at Homp Depot and replace them. Either way no big deal. Wow, I just read my own words and I made that sound way more complicated than it should be.

Grandpop is right. That appears to be felt paper. Slide it back into place and drive a roofing nail through the first row shingle to hold it. Make sure ou place the nail UNDER the tab of the second row to hide it from sight and weather. If this seems to involved you can get a small tube of roofing cement and dab a few spots along the length of the felt paper, then slide it under the shingles and leave it to dry. Just a note; WEAR DISPOSABLE GLOVES WHEN USING THE ROOFING CEMENT! It is sticky stuff!! Good luck...

If that is a piece of metal hanging down, you need to get that back in place as well. It is called a drip edge and provides support for the edge shingles.

I agree with Grandpop about pushing the hanging shingle back in place.

Rule of thumb for nails and shingles. When you are done, you should not see any nail heads.

Roofing "glue" in a caulk gun is a good/better solution that nails.

Good luck....
